Adam Levine, Singer Maroon 5, 35

adam levine yoga

Dubbed the rock-star yogi, no one can deny that Adam Levine is in shape. He graced the cover of Men’s Health and says that every gig that Maroon 5 play, he has a room backstage dedicated to yoga. Although he used to do traditional weight lifting, he disliked he broadening neck and the injuries that came with heavy weight lifting. As he grew increasingly frustrated by lower-back pain and tight hips and hamstrings, he decided to give yoga a try. That was seven years ago, and Levine hasn’t lifted a weight or entered a gym since. He feels that yoga takes what you have and molds and sculpts it, which is a much more natural way to look and feel. He also raves about how yoga aids his mental well-being

“I have a hard time sitting still,” Levine says. “I can be all over the map. Yoga has given me the ability to be more focused and make better decisions that come from a clear place.”

Yes, it keeps his stamina up, his physique toned, and his abs ripped. Adam also follows a mostly vegan diet.

ANTHONY KEIDIS, SINGER RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, 51

anthony kiedis

He represents the new paradigm of the anti-geezer, middle-age-defying rock god. He’s super buff, held up as the model of healthy living by Men’s Fitness magazine, and has said he loves defying the idea of how society conventionally sees you at 40, 50, and 60. He has said

“Discovering surfing at this stage of my life is definitely going to keep me active till the day I die. So, yeah, I accept the challenge… In the same way that [the late American exercise and nutritional guru] Jack LaLanne did—doing things in his 70’s that no man on earth could do: pulling tugboats across the San Francisco Bay with his teeth.”

This type of attitude towards fitness is a far cry from when he was interviewed with is band in the 1980’s when he claimed the only exercise he got was sex! Today, he combines surfing with swimming in chlorine-free pools, long jogs with his dog in the Hollywood Hills, drinking a lot of water in the morning, accupuncture, dinner before 6, and a mostly vegan diet (although he eats sustainable fish). He has said of his previously hard-partying ways-

“I spent most of my life looking for the quick fix and the deep kick. I shot drugs under freeway off-ramps with Mexican gang-bangers and in thousand-dollar-a-day hotel suites. Now I sip vitamin-infused water and seek out wild, as opposed to farm-raised, salmon.”

Beyonce-H-M-beyonce-34260145-1920-1200

BRAD PITT, ACTOR, 50

Attractive-Body-Of-Brad-Pitt

“I believe you make your day. You make your life. So much of it is all perception, and this is the form that I built for myself. I have to accept it and work within those compounds, and it’s up to me.”

From being featured in movies like Fight Club and Troy, Brad Pitt knows a thing or two about staying fit and obtaining lean muscle mass. Looking at Brad’s physique, it is obvious that he didn’t get that way eating burgers and fries. He stays away from dairy and fried foods, and processed foods like bleached white flour, soft drinks, pastries, and fruit juices. His training routine consists of focusing on a different muscle group each day of the week and finishing off the week with cardio on rest days.

BRADLEY COOPER, ACTOR, 39

bradley cooper

At 39, Bradley Cooper is definitely Hollywood A-list and known for being in great shape. His top 5 fitness tips are: super-set exercises to failure, don’t cheat on your diet for at least 6 weeks while your body detox’s, drink protein shakes- but make sure they are quality, stay focused, and drink A LOT of water.

“Staying focused on your goal helps you get through workouts and keeps you from cheating on your diet. Put a picture of what you want your body to look like in your kitchen. It’s a constant reminder where you need it most.”

Here is what Cooper says about detoxing the body by eating right:

“For at least six weeks. It’s vital you allow your body to rid itself of toxins and keep your hormones at optimal levels. Sugar and processed food cause your body to respond in a way that prevents proper muscle growth.”

BRITNEY SPEARS, SINGER, 32

Britney-753x1024

Britney has had some ups and downs over the years, but it seems that since announcing her Las Vegas residency, she has taken her health and fitness up a level.

“The [Vegas] performances won’t be simple … a massive party from start to finish, and to pull this off, I have to be in top condition and running at full speed.”

Her trainers have all called her an exceptional athlete and those that work with her says she is relentless and energetic during the grueling, long dance rehearsals. In addition to rehearsing 5-6 hours a day, she trains with a trainer in brief but intense 30 minute sessions that can be anything from boxing to climbing a fence so that she doesn’t get bored. Her nutrition has also improved as she’s gotten older- while she used to be a notorious cheeto fan, she now eats several well-balanced meals throughout the day to keep her energy levels up for her almost daily 2 hour show.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, SINGER, 65

bruce springsteen

Unlike many of the rockers in this list and throughout history, Bruce’s own bandmates have said that he is anomaly in the sense that he never lived hard- that he was probably the only person that they knew who had never tried drugs at all. Springsteen, who has undergone therapy to treat his crippling, suicidal depression, never did drugs because he saw how it destroyed his unstable, alcoholic father, who used to beat him as a kid. He did, however, use exercise and healthy lifestyle as a way to maintain some balance in his life- which is why now, at the age of 64, he still has the same wait as he did when he was 15! Springsteen maintains his age-defying physique by running on the treadmill and lifting weights with a trainer–a workout routine he has followed since his thirties. In addition to his regimented training for the past 3 decades, Bruce eats a mostly vegetarian diet and spends time enjoying his family, and reading, all of which are important to healthy lifestyle.

CHELSEA-HANDLER-SHAPE

Chelsea Handler didn’t grow up knowing how to eat healthy- and she spent years yo-yo dieting because of her choices- because she didn’t know any better. Now the only woman late-night show host is educated and enjoys living, and eating healthy. For the most part, Chelsea eats fresh wholesome foods-avoiding anything processed-whenever possible. Her day typically begins with a bowl of oatmeal mixed with a scoop of protein powder and a spoonful of ground flax seeds. Turkey and an arugula salad with shaved Parmesan-no dressing-is always her midmorning snack, and for lunch, she usually has sushi. Although she’s always been active, Chelsea says finding a workout she loves-and can commit to-has been a huge challenge- she’s tried yoga, and gets bored on the treadmill, but pilates, however, has been just the right fit. “It’s been the most gentle on my body,” says Chelsea. “I’m longer and leaner and much more graceful. I can honestly say it’s changed my body-and my life.”

CHER, SINGER, 68

cher

At 67, Cher has no intention of slowing down. As for how she maintains her slim physique, Cher is brutally honest, admitting it takes a strict diet and rigorous workouts.

“You have to work twice as hard,” she told E! “You have to be in the gym all the time, but I like it. When I was young I was a tomboy. I played sports. And I’m learning to surf right now. I like that kind of stuff, thank God.”

Currently, one of Cher’s favorite workouts is playing tennis on Wii. And we love that she appreciates the importance of fitness throughout a lifetime. She has said “I’ve been screaming at the top of my lungs at my family, ‘Work out! Work out! Old age is coming!’ At some point you will need the strength. Who would have ever thought you would get this old?”

CHRIS DAUGHTRY, LEAD VOCALIST AND GUITARIST OF DAUGHTRY, 34

daughtry

Two years ago, this rocker lost 23 lbs by altering his lifestyle and incorporating more fitness into his routine. Chris rose to fame after coming in fourth on the fifth season of American Idol and noted how he initially gained 25 lbs from being on tour and eating a lot of junk. After losing the weight, he gave his tips in an interview where he stated that he avoids late night eating, he stays away from his favorite foods like pizza by keeping them out of his sight, he exercises daily, and when he does have a cheat meal, he works out extra hard:

“If I do eat those things, which is going to happen, I pay for my carnivorous sins right away,” he says. “I get more exercise and burn off the calories. You have to pay for them as you go, and not let them turn into 25 extra pounds. I’m not going to totally deprive myself of the things I love to eat; instead I’ll eat them in moderation and then immediately deal with the fallout.”

His exercise routine includes jumping around on-stage, circuit training, and cardio. Although nothing comes easy, he has made healthy lifestyle a priority in his life.

clint eastwoodEastwood, a lifelong non-smoker, has been conscious of his health and fitness since he was a teenager, and practices healthful eating habits, even into his 80s. He practices daily transcendental meditation, and is renowned for being an obsessive health and fitness nut.

“I’d always done muscle-training exercise,” Clint says, “things like chins, clips and calisthenics, but it was when I was in the Army that I discovered the weights – the kind of training you’d call bodybuilding today. I never wanted to build huge muscles and bulk up like a competitive bodybuilder, but I realized very quickly that the best way to keep your muscles strong, hard, and fit was with weight training. And once I got into weight training, I never gave it up.”

Eastwood maintains a low-fat, high protein diet and gets plenty of sleep. Everything in moderation, nothing in excess. Some cardiovascular exercise, some muscle training. Eating healthy food and watching your weight. And exercise and attention to diet, Clint Eastwood believes, should be a lifetime habit, best begun when you are as young as possible.

“Stay away from carbohydrates, especially rich desserts. Keep a scale in your bathroom. Get proper rest. Try to be optimistic. Eat fruits and raw vegetables. Take vitamins. Skip beverages loaded with sugars. Avoid alcohol in excess.”

While filming, she often only has 25 minutes to workout, so we will fit a workout in that time, but do it at least 5 times a week. In the 25 min she will do five minutes of each: warm-up, upper-body strength training, lower-body moves, core-training exercises and fat-burning cardio work. When she does have more time, she loves doing kick-boxing, which is a great mix of strength training and cardio, and her lifestyle choices have made this 47 year old look half her age. Berry, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1989, follows a low-carb that features lots of vegetables, lean proteins and very little sugar.

For his physical role in Prince of Persia, Jake trained in parkour, sword fighting, and bulked up in muscle. Even after filming wrapped, he continued a 45-min, 6 day a week workout routine that alternated strength conditioning and cardio.

“I really just do it for myself,” he said. “It’s just an incredible thing to exercise, but for it to become like a meditative thing rather than just working out is amazing and that’s how it is for me.”

He finds dieting extremely difficult because he enjoys eating good food so much, but when he’s training for a role that requires him to be lean and muscular, he will diet and eat lean meats and vegetables.

As she has gotten older, Jane transitioned from the rigorous, high-impact aerobic exercise she extolled during the 1980s to gentler, lower-impact workouts. Fonda does yoga, strength-trains, walks, cycles, and uses the elliptical trainer. Since she has adopted a more laid-back approach to fitness, she makes a concerted effort to eat well. JENNY MCCARTHY, model, television host, and actress, 42

jenny-mccarthy-2011-danskin-photoshoot-outtakes-3-480x596

There’s a reason that this funny blonde bombshell has been a Playboy Cover girl 6 times, and that at 42, after having a child, she still has washboard abs. She maintains her amazingly toned figure with strength training and running three to five times per week and yoga twice a week. Jenny enjoys doing lunges, sit ups, pushups, and planks  — because she’s working my whole body. She also realizes that other than even more so than working out, food is the most important thing. “Especially in today’s age how convenient fast food restaurants are, and how exhausted we are as mothers. It’s too overwhelming that we sacrifice [healthy] food,” Jenny has said. The View host relies heavily on her soup in her gluten and dairy-free diet. However, don’t think that she hasn’t struggles with her health and weight before- the former Playmate of the Year once ballooned to 211lbs during her pregnancy with 10-year-old son Evan back in 2002. She credits healthy lifestyle and discipline to becoming healthy again.

Jessica combines walking lunges, sprinting, cardio workouts, and yoga. Her trainer has her do a lot of plyometrics in an intense workout that lasts under and hour. She also loves going for hikes and jogs with her dogs and instead of treating that activity as pure cardio, she focuses on the mental health benefits of bonding with her pups in nature “It keeps me very…clearheaded, and it helps me to refresh,” she says.

“For me, getting enough sleep, drinking lots of water, having a healthy diet, and staying away from alcohol are musts. It’s so boring, I know, but doing those things really helps.”

She eats a lot of vegetables, and grain proteins. She is a fan of fermented veggies and probiotics also, which she considers great for her skin and digestion.

Jim Carrey

THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE

This lanky actor recently trained and dieted intensely in order to have a 6-pack in his movie “Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” and says the intense regimen was extremely difficult to sustain. And while he eased off the intensity of his regimen, he does speak wonders to how working out and eating healthy makes him feel. The famous comedian recently gave up alcohol and cigarettes and started a strict new diet as part of a lifestyle makeover.

“Tomorrow, day 14, no wheat, dairy, sugar, coffee, soda, drugs, alcohol or tobac,” he tweeted. “A few more days till that sweet feeling but right now ain’t bad!” He added: “Clarity! Contentment! Youthfulness! Longevity! This diet, though tough at first, gives me that! Can u handle it? Just 3 weeks and you’ll see! I eat eggs, meat, fish (and) veggies cooked in olive oil, fruits, nuts, water, tea with honey or Stevia, gluten-free crackers and almond butter 4 snack.”

Carrey is also a keen runner, regularly doing five-mile runs. He once did an entire interview while running on a treadmill!

JIMMY FALLON, comedian, 40

jimmy fallon

The first lady, Michelle Obama, challenged him to a fitness competition on his show and though he lost (in a funny way), he stays very healthy in order to keep up with his hectic schedule. He drinks green juices that are a mixture of spinach, parsley, and to quote the comedian “God knows what else is in it.” He takes daily fish oil supplements, eats salads, and trains regularly with a trainer. Fallon is treating his new duties like a boxer training to go extra rounds. (Cue Rocky music here.) These days the comedian sleeps more, goes out less, and takes care of himself- because he realizes that without the host, the Tonight Show’s 200+ performances cannot go on!

JOAN JETT, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, 56

joan jett

As she told the New York Times a few years ago,

“most days I feel like 25″

and she stays active by always being on the go. Like many musicians, a demanding tour schedule leaves little time to sit around, but she does find time to exercise when home in Long Island. She’s been known to go biking and knock out 50 push-ups during commercial breaks! She also seems like the poster style for healthy living by challenging rock star preconceptions- Joan doesn’t smoke or drink, and does her best to stay out of the sun’s harmful rays. In terms of healthy diet, Joan has been a vegetarian for over 20 years and is an advocate for vegetarianism, saying that we do not need animals to sustain ourselves. She says she works out regularly but its mostly how active she is on stage that keeps her toned.

Outdoor games help him to maintain his body shape  and provide excellent cross training in order to maintain his all around toned, strong body. He has been quoted as saying:

“I’ve done well, but the reason is pretty simple: I’ve worked my *ss off,” he says. “Anything I’ve done well has taken many, many hours of preparation.”

This applies to his work ethic in general but also his fitness training.

Kathy, who says she loves her body more now, at age 53, than she did 20 years ago, has a very balanced approach to diet and fitness. She has a strict no-extremes policy, just eating and exercising sensibly. “But if I eat something that’s not so good for me, I don’t feel bad anymore. If I don’t exercise one day, I’ll make it up some other way” she says. Her schedule makes being consistent difficult, so three times a week of workouts is what she aims for. If she’s home, she does a full hour of cardio on the bike or treadmill, and weights. When she’s out of town, she will go to the gym at the hotel, or go for a very long walk. She says she’s a big believer in making your workout wherever you are.

When training, Matt Damon eats 6 meals a day, divided into 3 larger meals and 3 smaller snack-like meals in between each.  His total calories are broken down as such: 40% from protein, 20% from fat, and 40% from carbohydrates. He does, however, admit that extreme diets become more difficult on him as he gets older- and only adheres to strict diets when he needs to for a role.

“Sometimes you can get the body in shape, and the head ain’t in great shape,” he says. “But it’s real nice if you can coordinate ‘em.”

His trainer even attributes his youthful appearance with the fact that he keeps training year-round and not just for roles (as many actors in Hollywood do). McConaughey’s active lifestyle is matched by his love of healthy food. Because fitness plays such a big part in his own life, he started the non-profit organization j.k. livin foundation, which funds an after-school fitness and wellness program for some of the nation’s most vulnerable inner-city teenagers. The foundation’s name is shorthand for “just keep living,” a personal mantra inspired by the passing of his father.

He told the Daily Mail that, with the help of personal trainer Torje Eike, he trains up to six days per week. This includes running 8 miles a day, swimming, kickboxing and cycling. Sir Mick has said:

“I train five or six days a week, but I don’t go crazy. I alternate between gym work and dancing, then I do sprints, things like that. I’m training for stamina.”

While on tour, he warms up on a treadmill, but cuts back on the intensity of his training because of the energy he expends on stage. In a typical show (the Stones’ stages are 100ft wide by 50ft deep) he covers 12 miles. For the past decade, Jagger has been a devotee of organic produce — he’s particularly fond of avocados because of their regenerative qualities.

From many superstars in the world, Sting has been a perfect example of one who has maintained a healthy lifestyle and diet. The fact that he is now 62 and performs with as much energy as musicians a third of his age is proof that  his current physical condition was not obtained overnight, but rather his consistent and long term healthy lifestyle over the years. Sting eats macrobiotic which consists of eating lots of grains that are combined with vegetables, avoiding processed foods that contain preservatives, as well as reducing the consumption of meat, dairy, and sugar. Since Sting has moved his whole family onto a farm, he grows over 50 different types of organic fruits and vegetables, raises chickens and turkey, and even has a small lake where he can catch his own trout. Even when on tour, Sting brings a personal chef with him so that he maintains his healthy diet at all times. In terms of fitness, Sting enjoys running and yoga, both for the physical benefits but also for its meditative aspects. Sting  once said that yoga

“is like music, yoga is a long journey that will continue to grow and to learn, and very influential in the creative process.”

This 5’10” young country phenomenon credits running, hiking and dance workouts for her lean, toned body. She loves partaking in workouts that don’t feel like exercise but said in 2012 that she ran for an hour every day on the treadmill no matter what, saying she relied on rigorous exercise to keep her stamina up. The blonde beauty also said exercise quelled her anxiety. Taylor has said

“I don’t care about losing weight as much as feeling good about myself. You can’t indulge without exercising, so I exercise because I love eating and I don’t want to have to live without anything.”

She eats really well during the week, including lots of salads and yogurt, and indulges a bit on the weekends.

TIM MCGRAW, singer, 47

tim mcgraw

At age 46, Tim McGraw has maintained a 40-lbs weight loss in his 40s. He states his motivation for getting fit is to be able to perform in front of his fans, have energy, and feel good- he even quit alcohol. He has said he works out around 4 hours a day when not preforming, using pulleys and bars and doing core training, while incorporating strength and balanced movements to build up the muscles between the ribs and connective tissues.

“The reason you want to do this is to be in front of thousands of people, playing that guitar and doing what you love. And when I’m on stage, I want to feel good.”

He does, however, admit that he enjoys occasional indulgences such as a burger or sweet tea- but does an extra hour of working out to counterbalance the extra calories.

TINA TURNER, singer, 74

tina turner

Tina Turner, at 74, seems to just get better and better with age – a phenomenon the singer believes is down to a combination of great style, health and attitude.”A 50-year-old woman is equivalent to 40 when I was growing up,” she insists.

“If you take care of yourself, 60 is nothing for women these days. In today’s world you can be the kind of woman you want to be.”

The legendary singer- who has stayed a size 10 for the past 4 decades- puts her stable size down to not eating after 6pm, drinking lots of water and, of course, dancing. She says she stays away from sweet and prefers to eat healthy foods because of how they make her feel. Her daily breakfast consists of banana, kiwi and melon, and brown German bread. In addition, she believes sleep is so important that she only has two meals a day because she sleeps so long. With a home in Switzerland, she has become a devotee of saunas and steam rooms and “walking 10 miles up and down stairs at home”. It is Tina’s mental attitude that perhaps plays the biggest part in her refusal to let herself go- she believes we are what we think and that women need to embrace themselves at every point in their lives!

TOM CRUISE, actor, 52

Cruise, who is 51 years old, is known for doing a lot of his own stuntwork in his action films, which means he always has to maintain peak physical strength and endurance with functional muscle. In addition to following a strict diet and lifting weights several hours a day, Tom also does cardio daily.
