A Happiness Thread: Humanity’s brightness shines through Coronavirus Pandemic

0

It is undoubtedly a stressful time, as the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic spreads across the world. Many countries have closed schools and non-essential business activities and are on lockdown. Research shows that positivity is a great immune booster, and maintaining inner happiness is paramount to our mental and physical health. As we sit, isolated at home with the news perpetually reminding us of the negative of the virus (and there are plenty), we want this little corner of the internet to be a reminder of the best in humanity coming together- because united, we are always stronger:

Turn up the volume nice and loud and please enjoy this video. While sitting in self-isolation, it is quite cathartic to have sufficient time to travel back in time and reflect on the incredible situations our @sealegacy team has experienced. Since I was seven years old, I have had the privilege of spending time with beluga whales in the wild. Beluga whales rarely show much more than the tops of their backs, making it practically impossible to capture a compelling photograph of them from eye level. That all changed one night during the fall of 2017 when we were filming with our dear friends on board the Archimedes in the Canadian Arctic. It seemed as if there were maybe 30 beluga whales in the estuary, but when we put our @djiglobal drone into the air, our jaws dropped. We floated in the little rubber boat with our mouths agape as we stared at the screen showing hundreds of whales courting, taking care of their newborn calves, molting, travelling, rubbing on the pebble bottom and just being belugas. If we had been in a helicopter, it would have scared these sensitive whales out of the shallow waters. In my photography career, I have crashed two ultralight airplanes, and the second crash almost proved fatal. See the next photograph. After a while, I came to terms that it is was too risky for me to do low level flying and photography at the same time. Drones have proven to be a game-changer. On this night near Baffin Island, we had the Phantom, Mavic and the Inspire all in the air, never altering the behavior of these canaries of the sea or our safety.
