The Future of Urban Texas was an event held by The Texas Tribune and University of Houston-Downtown. The event hosted conversations about the future of Texas in domains including education, poverty, transportation, public health, housing, taxes, and economic development.

In attendance were some of Texas’s political leaders including Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Texas Tribune’s co-founder, and CEO Evan Smith, and Houston’s own Mayor Sylvester Turner, who was highlighted for his contributions.

Mayor Turner was a panelist in the category “A Conversation With The Mayors” where he covered the homelessness epidemic and other urban issues in Texas. He highlighted the improvements that have been made in Houston in the past decade and where we still have to go in keeping the residents of Texas employed and secure. Smith commended Houston of reducing its homeless population by 54% since 2011 and asked how other cities can follow its lead.
