Houston’s Official “Fitness Czar”, Samir Becic, met with the United States Surgeon General Vice Admiral Dr. Vivek Murthy, M.D., MBA at Texas Tribune’s annual #TribFest. This was a meeting that Samir was looking forward to as Vice Admiral Murthy is a big proponent of fitness and he has been quoted as saying “Exercise is far more important than we understand and can function as an acute antidepressant,” and has stated that if you walk an average of 22 minutes per day, you can reduce your risk of diabetes by 30 percent and your risk of heart disease by 20 percent. In August of 2022, he was featured in a Men’s Health feature, discussing his own wellness routine.
It was an honor to present my dedicated book ReSync Your Life to U.S. @Surgeon_General during #TribFest22. He demonstrated an enormous amount of knowledge and empathy during his panel. Surgeon General Murthy and Samir Becic align on many of their views regarding public health, in particular, childhood obesity- Dr. Murthy has publicly voiced that it is important to integrate health into every aspect of what we do in our lives, including work and school. He emphasized the importance of starting young in a 2016 tweet: “Childhood #obesity is a serious health issue that can lead to #diabetes, #asthma & more.” Samir Becic agrees wholeheartedly; he believes fitness can be fun and should be as much a part of education as reading, writing, and math.
“It was an honor to meet this incredible public servant who is making a significant positive impact on the American health system.
